“Back then, we wore dresses to school every day, and having hairy legs and arms was a source of embarrassment,” Anna recounts. So she began shaving her legs at just 10 years old, which only made things worse. While body hair is completely normal and embraced as beautiful, there are others like Anna who choose to have it removed.

In Singapore, 60% of adults have undergone hair removal treatments, favouring long-lasting solutions like electrolysis. Additionally, the laser hair removal market generated $43.2 million in 2022 and is projected to reach $186.3 million by 2030.

Both electrolysis and laser hair removal have become popular because of their effective results.  In this blog, we will be sharing the differences between the two treatments and help you decide which one feels right for you.

How Electrolysis and Laser Hair Removal Works

Shaving, waxing, and plucking are time-consuming and can irritate the skin, often leading to ingrown hairs that may cause scarring or hyperpigmentation. For those looking for longer-term solutions, electrolysis and laser hair removal are the two most established methods for permanently reducing or removing hair.

Electrolysis is a technique that involves inserting a very fine needle into the hair follicle and delivering electrical energy to destroy the hair root, also known as the hair bulb. This method targets each follicle and is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal. There are three primary modalities of electrolysis: galvanic electrolysis, thermolysis, and blend method.

Galvanic electrolysis is the method that uses a direct electrical current to trigger a chemical reaction inside the follicle. The natural salt and water in the follicle are converted into sodium hydroxide, destroying the hair-producing cells. Thermolysis uses high-frequency alternating current that produces heat through vibration. The head damages the cells in the hair bulb, effectively preventing regrowth. Lastly, as the name suggests, the blend method combines galvanic and thermolysis techniques, offering chemical and heat-based destruction benefits.

Meanwhile, laser hair removal emits specific wavelengths of light absorbed by melanin, the pigment found in the hair. The light energy is converted into heat, which damages the hair follicle. Unlike electrolysis, laser hair removal can treat multiple hairs in a single pulse, making it more efficient for larger areas. However, it is most effective on people with lighter skin tones and darker hair, as the laser requires contrast between skin and hair to target the hair follicle accurately.

Electrolysis vs. Laser: Pros and Cons

Electrolysis

PROS:

  • Suitable for all skin tones and hair types, regardless of colour or texture.
  • Offers genuinely permanent hair removal when performed consistently.
  • Effectively treats light-coloured hair, including blonde, grey, red, and white strands that lasers often miss.

CONS:

  • Often described as more painful, with many comparing the sensation to a quick sting or mild discomfort akin to being tattooed.
  • Costs typically range from $39 to $180 per session, depending on the area and session length, making the total cost add up over time.
  • It is a time-intensive process, as each hair is treated individually and requires multiple sessions for full results.

Laser Hair Removal

PROS:

  • Capable of treating multiple hairs at once, making it suitable for larger body areas.
  • Delivers faster results, with an average hair reduction of 20% to 25% after just one session.
  • Typically, it requires fewer sessions than electrolysis for extensive areas.
  • Efficient coverage makes the process more tolerable, especially for bigger treatment zones.
  • The average price per session is around $600, which can increase to $1200 depending on the size of the treatment area. The reduced number of sessions can make it more cost-effective in the long run compared to electrolysis.

CONS:

  • Laser treatments are FDA-approved for permanent hair reduction, not complete removal, so some regrowth over time is normal.
  • Because the laser targets melanin, individuals with blonde, red, white, or grey hair may not experience optimal results.
  • Side effects can include temporary itching or swelling; in rare cases, more serious issues like burns, skin discolouration, or infections may occur.

What Works Best for Your Skin and Hair

Electrolysis is recognized for its versatility, as it effectively treats all hair types like coarse, fine, light, or dark. According to the Hollywood Institute (2025), electrolysis boasts a success rate of approximately 93%. While laser hair removal relies on pigment in the hair, electrolysis targets individual hair follicles directly.

Laser hair removal works on people with dark hair and lighter skin. The contrast allows the laser to accurately target the melanin in the hair while avoiding damage to the surrounding skin. However, it is less effective on blonde, red, grey, or white hair due to the low melanin content.

In terms of hair thickness, electrolysis is effective on fine and coarse hair. Although less visible, fine hairs can still be permanently removed through precise targeting by a technician. Coarse hairs, which may resist other hair removal methods, can be successfully treated with electrolysis by destroying the growth of each strand.
